Wislizenus, Friedrich \[later: Frederick\] Adolph (1810-1889), German-born (Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt/Thuringian) American traveller, physician and author; studied natural sciences at Jena, Göttingen, Zürich and Paris; to the United States in 1835; settling as country physician at Mascoutah, Illinois; travelled in the Middle West 1839; settling as physician in partnership with Georg Engelmann in St. Louis 1839; travelled to Northern Mexico and the Gulf region 1846-1847; from 1850-1852 in Europe and California, again in St. Louis from 1852.
