#### Note
The name of Robert Wight was repeatedly misprinted "Richard White" between 1829 and 1832 (Wallich, Numer. List. 60. 1829; on *Illustration of Indian Botany* 1830-1832 in W.J. Hooker's Misc. bot., see Basak 1981, p. 789.
#### Eponymy
*Wightia* Wallich (1830) very likely honors this author but the dedication reads: "in honorem... Richardi Wight,..." (See note above).
### Publications
##### n.17.572. Illustrations of Indian botany
**Title**
*Illustrations of Indian botany*; principally of the southern parts of the peninsula.... Glasgow (Curtt & Bell,...) 1831 \[-1832\]. Qu. (in 2-s).
**Abbreviated title**: *Ill. Ind. bot.*
**Notes**
*Publ*.: 1831 (t.p., but possibly early 1832, see below), p. \[1\]-70, *suppl. pl. 1-19, 21-41* (col. copp.). *Copies*: B-S, G (58 p., *32 pl.*), HH, K (as copy at G). A reprint of four papers published in W.J. Hooker, Bot. Misc. 2: 90-110, *suppl. pl. 1-10*. Nov-Dec 1830, 344-360, *suppl. pl. 11-19*. before 10 Sep 1831, 3: 84-104, *suppl. pl. 21-32* before 3 Mar 1832 (publ. late 1831 hence possible) and 3: 291-302, *suppl. pl. 33-41*. 1 Aug 1833 (1 Mar 1833, fide Marshall 1936). It seems preferable to cite this work from the *Bot Misc*. and not from the reprint because there is no real evidence that the publication in book form came out before the publication in the journal.
*Note*: The author's name is given as Richard Wight on the title page of the reprint, and in the first *three* fascicles of the publication in the Bot. Misc. However, fascicle four in Bot. Misc. (1 Aug 1832) has the correct "Robert Wight". The use of Richard was a simple error by W.J. Hooker.
*Continuation*: *in* W.J. Hooker, J. Bot. 1: 62-67. Apr 1834, 225-231. Jul 1834. Not reprinted.

Descriptions will shortly appear in the "Prodromus Florae Peninsulae Indiae orientalis..." In that work we refer to the numbers in the Catalogue "Rob.t Wight 28th May 1833". ##### n.17.576. Prodromus florae peninsula Indiae orientalis
**Title**
*Prodromus florae peninsula Indiae orientalis*: containing abridged descriptions of the plants found in the peninsula of British India, arranged according to the natural system ... vol. I. London (Parbury, Allen, & Co.) 1839. †. Oct.
**Abbreviated title**: *Prodr. fl. Ind. orient.*
**Notes**
*Co-author*: George Arnott Walker Arnott (1799-1868), TL-2/1: 67-69. Collections at E-GL.
*Publ*.: 10 Oct 1834 (see below), p. \[i\]-xxxvii, \[i\*\], \[1\]-480. *Copies*: BR, G, HH, LIV, MICH(2), MO, NY, PH, U, USDA; IDC 5812.
*Note*: Only vol. 1 was published. For illustrations see Wight's *Icones*, which have reference to the species numbers of the Prodromus. Arnott alone did the Leguminosae (Bentham, Comm. Legum. gen. 1837). – Arnott evidently sent parts of the book in advance to Adrien de Jussieu. He sent the first 64 pages to de Jussieu (archives P) with a letter dated 15 Aug 1834. Pages 65-112 followed on 24 Sep 1834. There is no evidence to show that these parts were anything else but loose sheets. The book is listed as received by the Académie on 15 Dec 1834. The date of announcement of publication in Bent's Monthly Literary Advertiser of 10 October can be accepted as that of publication; (P. & W. Sep 1834). The book remained unfinished: volume 2 was never published. On 1 Aug 1834 Arnott wrote to Bentham (letter at K) that he was not going to print volume 2 until de Candolle's fifth volume of the Prodromus dealing with the Compositae was in his hands. This volume appeared in October 1836. – In an undated publisher's leaflet \[publ. around Sep 1834\] it is stated that the second volume "will contain, besides the portions written by the authors themselves, contributions by various eminent botanists; among which may be mentioned, the Compositae by Professor De Candolle of Geneva, the Labiatae and Scrofularinae by George Bentham, Esq...."

##### n.17.577. Contributions to the botany of India
**Title**
*Contributions to the botany of India*... London (Parbury, Allen, & Co.) 1834. Oct.
**Abbreviated title**: *Contr. bot. India*.
**Notes**
*Publ*.: Dec 1834 (P & W), p. \[1\]-136. *Copies*: BR, G, HH, MICH, NY, PH, U, USDA; IDC 5811.
*Note* (*1*): G.A. Walker Arnott contributed to this work as an editor (p. 129) and sometimes as co-author of taxa (duly indicated). The treatment of the Compositae was done by A.P. de Candolle (p. 5-27) and several names (e.g. on p. 20-27) traditionally credited to his *Prodromus* actually first appear here. A few names taken from Wallich's *Catalogue* are validated in this work. The book deals only with *Compositae, Asclepiadaceae* and *Cyperaceae* \[D.H. Nicolson\].

*Note* (*1*): In plates \[1\]-\[20\] of the book the numbers (between 35 and 723) refer to the numbers of the species in Wight & Arnott's Prodromus. In the other plates the running number of the plate (21-2101) is combined with the Wight and Arnott number in a fractional form.
*Note* (*2*): Plates bearing the legend "Roxburghianae" represent redrawings of Roxburgh's unpublished plates now at the Calcutta Botanic Garden, and thus represent Roxburghian species as described in his "Flora Indica" ed. 1,1 (1820), 2 (1824) and ed. 2 (1832). Where two numbers appear, one above the other, the "numerator" represents Wight's plate sequence (this number to be cited); the "denominator" is a reference to the species number in Wight & Arnott's "Prodromus" (1834).
