Greifswald 1839; from then on independent scientist in Berlin; habil. Univ. Berlin 1848. **Abbreviated name**: *Walp.* \[standard form in IPNI: *Walp.*\] #### Herbarium and types Walpers' own herbarium, containing many of the types of his new taxa, was sold after his death. This herbarium contained about 3000 species in 53 portfolio's "fast ungeordnet". In addition to this personal herbarium Walpers owned a collection of plants (1000 species) from Guadeloupe and Panama made by Duchassaing, also containing many types, the Elkan herbarium with the Flora Borussica types (see C.A. Patze et al., *Fl. Preuss.*, TL-2/7509) and collections of pharmaceutical plants and preparations. All these collections were offered for sale but their present location is unknown. – *Letters* to D.F.L. von Schlechtendal in [[Collection HAL|HAL]]; other letters at [[Collection G|G]], [[Collection UPS|UPS]]-UB. #### Note Flora (36: 423. 1853): "Am 18. Juni d. (Follows a summary of his herbaria: Collection Guadeloupe by Duchassaing; herbarium Elkan (4.500); Walper's own herbarium with his types; herbarium medicinale; pharmacological collection). #### Bibliography and biography ADB 40: 769-770; AG 2(1): 730; Backer p. 663; Barnhart 3: 455 (b. 26 Dec 1816, d. 18 Jun 1853); BM 5: 2260; CSP 6: 254-255; Frank 3 (Anh.): 110; GR p. 150-151; Herder p. 143; Hortus 3: 1206; Jackson p. 117, 118, 350; Lasègue p. 526; LS 28274; MW p. 520; PR 1112, 6143, 9972-9974, ed. 1: 933, 2242, 10960-10961; Rehder 5: 900; RS p. 147; SBC p. 134; TL-1/1386-1387; TL-2/5895, see indexes; Tucker 1: 729; Zander ed. 10, p. 729, ed. 11, p. 832. #### Biofile - Anon., Bonplandia 1: 134, 137, 143, 160 (list herb. etc. from W.'s estate), 197, 207, 256. 1853, 2: 41. Soc. bot. France, Kew Journ. Bot., Oest. Bot. Wochenbl., Ann. Journ. Sci., some of which were assembled by Barnhart, as well as on information contained in Walpers's correspondence. The dates for vols. 4-7 are conjectural; more precise information can be obtained from Hinrich's lists for the years 1857-1871 (not available to us). In general it is more likely that the parts appeared towards the end of the periods indicated than towards the beginning. Walpers commit ted suicide in 1853. The Annales were then continued by Carl Mueller. For critical notes by Walpers on some of his reviewers see his notes on the covers of Heft 1 and 5 of volume 3 of the Annales. Walpers had already decided before his death not to continue the "Annales" beyond volume 3. In his letters to Seemann he wrote "Lass sich einmal ein Anderer dabei machen diese undankbare Arbeit fortzusetzen; ich habe mir damit anstatt Freunde, Feinde gemacht; ich habe die Sache herzlich satt; der Verleger wird reich, ich arm dabei.." *Ref*.: Seemann, B., Bonplandia 2: 87-88, 123-124, 163-166, 176-178. 1854.
