Nathan Wulff \["Wolff"\] (1786-1854), Danish physician and botanist; studied with M. Vahl at Copenhagen; surgeon at Serampore 1807, working with W. Roxburgh at Calcutta 1809; to Mauritius for health reasons 1812, entered the British colonial medical service at Calcutta 1814; assistant superintendent Calcutta Botanic Garden 1815-1816, superintendent ib. 1817-1846 with interruptions for tours of inspection, European and sick leave; collected in Nepal 1820-1822, Singapore and Penang 1822, in Assam 1833 and the Cape 1842-1844 as well as in India. **Abbreviated name**: *Wallich* \[standard form in IPNI: *Wall.*\] #### Herbarium and types [[Collection K|K]] ([[Collection K|K]]-W) (available on IDC 7394 incl. catalogue); further material at [[Collection A|A]], [[Collection AWH|AWH]], [[Collection B|B]] (partly destr.), [[Collection BM|BM]], [[Collection BR|BR]], [[Collection C|C]], [[Collection CGE|CGE]], [[Collection CAL|CAL]], [[Collection DBN|DBN]], [[Collection DD|DD]], [[Collection DPU|DPU]], [[Collection DS|DS]] ([[Collection CAS|CAS]]), [[Collection E|E]], [[Collection FI|FI]], [[Collection G|G]], [[Collection G|G]]-DC, [[Collection GJO|GJO]], [[Collection FH|FH]], [[Collection FI|FI]], [[Collection H|H]], [[Collection K|K]], [[Collection KIEL|KIEL]], [[Collection L|L]], [[Collection LE|LE]], [[Collection LINN|LINN]] (in J.E. His types are also mainly at Kew. Wallich collected extensively and made many duplicates; the *numbered* specimens were distributed from London (after 1826) under the auspices of the East India Company. Wallich's main set was incorporated in the herbarium of the East India Company which came to [[Collection LINN|LINN]] in 1832, and which was transferred to [[Collection K|K]] in 1913. The numerous duplicates are in many herbaria, often accompanied by new names without descriptions. These names will also be found in the lithographed "Numerical list". - (2) D. Don's *Prodromus* (1825) was based on Wallich specimens sent to Lambert in 1818 and 1819 (see W.T. Stearn *in* H. Hara et al., Enum. fl. pl. Nepal 1: 8. 1978). Part of this Nepal set is at [[Collection BM|BM]] and other parts are at [[Collection CGE|CGE]], [[Collection FI|FI]] and [[Collection PR|PR]] as well as perhaps in various other herbaria. Prain's remark in Ann. Bot. Gard. Calcutta 8: 328. 1898, that Wallich's Nepal plants in Lambert's herbarium were destroyed as unsaleable can therefore not be entirely correct (Miller, Taxon 19: 545. 1970; inf. G. Seidenfaden). *Correspondence*: partly at [[Collection K|K]], further letters at [[Collection G|G]], [[Collection UPS|UPS]]. For further mss. material see Bridson et al.
