Univ. Padua; to Portugal 1764 or 1765; founded the Ajuda botanical garden in Lisboa 1766-1768; professor of chemistry and natural history at the University of Coimbra; founder and first director of the Coimbra botanical garden (1773-1791), later in similar functions in Lisboa; during the French occupation of Portugal in exile 1810-1815, part of the time in London. **Abbreviated name**: *Vand.* \[standard form in IPNI: *Vand.*\] #### Herbarium and types Said to be at the *École polytechnique de Lisbonne* by Alph. de Candolle (now [[Collection LISU|LISU]]).
