*Archiv der Gewächskunde*... Wien (Auf Kosten der Herausgebers) \[1811-\] 1812-1818. 5 Hefte. Qu.
**Abbreviated title**: *Arch. Gewächst.*
**Notes**
*Publ*.: published in two editions: with uncoloured plates and with coloured plates. The uncoloured editions came out first. The plates themselves are not numbered but correspond with numbered texts; numbered texts are accompanied by two plates, here indicated as bis-numbers. We saw an insufficient number of copies and give our annotations of two copies. Most notes on this work mention that copies vary greatly in composition.
*Uncoloured edition*: copy G in 5 Lieferungen, of which 1 and 2 supposedly made up the first volume ("Band"), with a volume t.p. dated 1812; nos. 3 and 4 were presumably meant to constitute vol. 2, with a volume t.p. Wien 1814 (the copy has a cover of Lieferung 4). Lief. 5 is separate, and provided with a cover dated 1818. A copy at NSUB has 4 Lief. with *59, 58, 53* and *57 pl*. The copy at HH (2 Lief.) has 54 and 58 pl.
*Preface material to vol. 1*: p. \[i\]-xxiv, p. xxiv dated 15 Mar 1812, t.p. 1812. Presumably issued with the second Lieferung \[Heft\].
*Lieferung 1* (no cover seen), publ. Sep 1811 (available at Michaelis Messe 1811), p. \[1\]-28, *pl. 1-50* with second plates for nos. *7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13*, 27, *39*. \[Most sources list 59 plates, rather than the 58 listed here\].
*Lieferung 2* (no cover seen) 1812, p. 29-64, \[9\]-16, *pl. 51-100* with second plates for nos.
*67, 68, 80, 86, 89, 90, 92*.
*Preface material* for vol. 2. 1814, p. \[i\]-vi (p. vi: 22 Aug 1814), issued with Lieferung 4.
*Lieferung 3* (no cover seen), 1813 or 1814, p. \[i-iv\], 65-128, \[1\]-7, *pl. 101-150* with *second plates* for *nos. 102, 104, 108*.
*Lieferung 4*: 1814, cover p. \[i-ii\] (p. ii: 22 Aug 1814), p. \[9\]-12, 129-148, *pl. 151-200* with *second plates* for *nos. 176, 177, 181, 182, 189, 190*.
*Lieferung* 5: 1818, cover, p. \[i-iv\], \[15\]-16, *pl. 201-250*, with *second plates* for *nos. 201, 202, 203, 205, 206, 207, 208, 209, 210, 214, 215, 220, 229, 239, 242, 243, 245* and *third* plates for *243* and *245*.
*Coloured edition*: *copies*: B-S (analysis below by W. Lack), M (text only of vols. 1, 3, 4). Four volumes with half titles "Archiv der Gewächskunde" and main titles *Ausgemahlte Tafeln aus dem Archiv der Gewächskunde*,... Erster \[-Vierter\] Band.
*1*: t.p. 1813, publication of coloured plates started 1 Oct 1812, well after the publication of the coloured edition had begun, p. \[i, in\], frontisp., \[3\]-34, \[35-56\], *117* unnumbered col. copp., p. 12: 15 Hornung \[Feb\] 1813, p. 16: 16 Feb 1813.
*2*: t.p. 1813 (p. 6: 15 Jul 1813), p. \[1\]-24, \[25-44\], *123 pl*. id.
*3*: t.p. 1814 (p. 10: 15 Feb 1814), p. \[1\]-61, \[63-82\], *176 pl*. id.
*4*: t.p. 1814 (p. 6: 30 Sep 1814), p. \[1\]-42, \[43-62\], *122 pl*. id.
*Note*(*1*): Trattinick published a list of 800 copper engravings which had been prepared for this work in Jahrb. Gewächsk. 1(2): 169-185. 1819. The uncoloured engravings were available separately. They probably constitute the total body of plates which he had planned to publish in the Arch. Gewächsk. which remained unfinished.
*Note 2*: an undated pamphlet at G, gives a report on the progress of e.g. the *Archiv*. Wien (Gedruckt bey Anton Strauss) *Copy Auswahl* at M has *Hefte* nos. 1, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 1814-1817.
*Note 3*: Artists copper plates: I. Strenzel (mainly), Fricke, Hawatschek, Hohlaus (Hollaus), Kazinger, Reinelli, F.
*Note 4*: The frontispieces to the four volumes of the coloured editions (*Ausgemahlte Tafeln* ...) are portraits of L. Trattinnick (1), C. Linnaeus (2), G.L. de Buffon (3), F.G. Dietrich (4).
*Note 5*: the text was also issued separately as *Observ. bot*. see below.

Planned to be an overall monographic treatment of all plants ("dass es ewig das Hauptwerk der Botanik bleiben muss..."). The printing of the text on one side was meant to enable the owner to use them e.g. as herbarium labels. Conceived as a common enterprise of all botanists.
