Thurber, George (1821-1890), American botanist and chemist; quartermaster and commissary on the United States Boundary Commission to settle the boundary between the United States and Mexico 1850-1853; with the United States Assay Office in New York 1853-1856; lecturer on botany and materia medica College of Pharmacy, New York, 1856-1860, 1865-1866; professor of botany and head of the Michigan Agricultural College 1859-1863; editor of the American Agriculturist 1863-1885; president of the Torrey Botanical Club succeeding J. Torrey 1873-1880.
