Swartz made use of an unpublished Linnaeus fil. manuscript when writing the *Prodromus*. The Index kewensis cites, for this reason, e.g. *Thrinax* Linnaeus f. ex O. A number of orchid names in vol. 3 are referred to with indication of correct pagination in Schrader, Neu. J. Bot. 1: 1-108. Mar 1805. Willdenow, Sp. pl. 4(1), 1805 also refers to orchid names with the correct page number in the Flora. Garay concludes that it is highly probable that vol. 3, p. 1231-1566 were published in 1804. – Sayre (SY p. 30) dates vol. 3. 11 Oct 1806. It may well be that the date 1806 refers only to the complete vol. 3; there is, however, no independent proof beyond the indications given by Garay, of a publication in parts. Almborn (in litt.) also agrees that "there is nothing to support such a hypothesis". *Ref*.: Hitchcock, A.S., Contr. U.S. natl.
