### Author
Steudel, Ernst Gottlieb \[von\] (1783-1856), German (Württemberg) botanist and physician; studied medicine at Tübingen University; Dr. med. ib. 1805; from 1806 practicing physician at Esslingen, from 1826 as Königlich Würtembergischer Ober-Amts-Physikus; founder, with C.F. Hochstetter, of the "Botanischer Reiseverein", Esslingen 1825.
**Abbreviated name**: *Steud.* \[standard form in IPNI: *Steud.*\]
#### Herbarium and types
After Steudel's death, on 12 Mai 1856, his friend and executor, C.G. Nees von Esenbeck, offered his herbarium (20.000 species) for sale. It was acquired by the Comte de Franqueville, whose collections were later bought by Drake del Castillo. The latter left his herbarium to [[Collection P|P]] and [[Collection PC|PC]] where it is now part of the herbier général. An early herbarium was acquired by Fielding in 1835 ([[Collection OXF|OXF]]). Steudel's types may also be in other herbaria consulted by him (e.g. [[Collection CN|CN]], [[Collection K|K]], [[Collection L|L]], [[Collection PH|PH]], [[Collection STR|STR]]). Steudel collected only few plants himself; the majority of the plants in his herbarium were collected by others. The material distributed by the "Botanischer Reiseverein" was also collected by others (see Baur 1870). Steudel sometimes identified specimens for series of exsiccatae distributed by R.F. Hohenacker; these exsiccatae, however, were independent of those distributed by the Reiseverein which had by that time ceased to be active. – *Letters* to C.H. Mertens at [[Collection HU|HU]], to D.F.L.von Schlechtendal at [[Collection HAL|HAL]]; further letters at [[Collection G|G]].

#### Der Botanische Reiseverein Esslingen
Steudel and Christian Ferdinand Hochstetter, both at Esslingen, founded this society (in Latin texts "Unio itineraria") in December 1825 (it was active until 1842). The full story of this undertaking is told in great detail by Karl Baur, Jahrb. Gesch. oberdeut. Reichsstädte 16: 228-266. 1970. – The travellers and collectors are listed by Baur (p. 244-263). Notes on the activities and collections appeared especially in *Flora*:

The first memorandum calling for subscriptions (membership), dated 14 Dec 1825, appeared in the Corr.-Bl. Württ. landw. Ver. 8: 314. 1825, followed by a pamphlet with latin text "Rei herbariae amicis omnibusque naturae curiosis salutem!", 3 p., dated 9 Apr 1826 (copy: G).
The *Reiseverein* ceased to be active soon after the collector Rudolf Friedrich Hohenacker settled at Esslingen in 1842 and started a firm selling exsiccatae. Hohenacker sold, in commission, left-over series of the Verein, but his "Anstalt" should not be confused with the "Verein".
