Zeit. 28 Mai 1880; Flora 1 Jun 1880), p. \[i, iii\], \[1\]-154, \[1\]. *Copies*: BR, G, H, HH, NY. – Also issued in Ann. Soc. bot. Lyon, Mém. 7: 1-154. 1880. – "The work of a classical purist who would unhesitatingly alter every botanical name, generic and specific alike, which does not square with the canons laid down by the author" and "The airy manner in which Dr. Saint-Lager proposes to constitute new generic names, as *Glechonion* \[for Glechoma\], and *Meladendron* \[for Melaleuca\], as well as to set aside names like *Anteuphorbium* and *Aphaca*, which were perfectly well known as single names long before Linnaeus came into existence, shows his eminent unfitness for universal censorship"... "it is fortunately powerless to set aside accepted nomenclature; what Salisbury could not do, seventy years ago, will not be accomplished now by Dr. Saint-Lager" (B.D.Jackson 1880). Most of the names suggested by Saint-Lager in this work are later orthographic variants which can be rejected. The main changes proposed by Saint-Lager concern:
1. Changing specific names not in accordance with grammar, including differences of opinion on grammatical gender.
2. Replacing two-word epithets by new ones rather than hyphenate them.
3. Re-instating greek suffixes for greek words (Dianthos).
4. The rejection of "barbaric" epithets, eponyms or with a "ridiculous" connotation.

Lyon, Mem. 8: 149-204. 1880 (1881), with the addition of one page (55) of errata to the 1880 *Remarques* with the motto "medice, cura te ipsum". The publication brings further precisions of correct grammatical coining of generic and specific names especially with respect to those of greek origin. Eponyms have to be based on the latinised version of the names of the respective botanists; tautonymous specific names in meaning (not simply in form), that is, where the epithet repeats the idea of the generic name, have to be abandoned (*Sagittaria sagittifolia*).

Lyon 29: 367-382. 1882 (1883). – Tournefort is said to have clearly stated that the names of species should be binary (Tournefort, Inst. rei herb. 1: 63 "Nomina plantarum sunt quaedam veluti definitiones, quorum prima vox genus plantae, cetera differentiam exprimunt". However, binary names for species are found in many early botanical publications such as *Cassia fistularis* with Albert the Great and many others were in use already in classical times: *Salix viminalis* with Virgilius (Georg. 2: 446).

Lyon 11 (Mém.): 1-48. 1883 (1884). Classical botanists, e.g. Theophrastus, were acquainted with the phenomenon of sexuality in plants, e.g. in Palms. The words "male" and "female" were later used for various connotations: less versus more fertile, larger versus smaller, for morphological analogy and metaphorically ("Orchis"), as an expedient to distinguish closely related species. Furthermore the epithets "mas" and "foemina" should be banned from nomenclature: *Cornus mas* should become *C. erythrocarpa*, etc.

Some 18.000 botanical names (19% of the number of then current names of plants) should have to be corrected. He replies to Candolle (1883) who had declined to accept the Saint-Lager reforms.
