**Abbreviated name**: *Spreng.* \[standard form in IPNI: *Spreng.*\]
#### Herbarium and types
Kurt Sprengel's considerable and rich herbarium (21.806 species) came first to his son Anton. After the latter's death, in 1851, it was sold in parts. "Sprengel's herbarium, valuable to some public collection on account of the number of ill-described and wrongly-named specimens which the author of the 16th edition of the "Systema vegetabilium" has made, has been entirely dismembered and sold in small portions to different individuals and institutions." (Seemann). A certain number of families and genera were sold to specialists, so e.g. the Compositae to Schultz-Bipontinus (now through the herbier Cosson at [[Collection P|P]] in the herbier général). The Umbelliferae and Caryophyllaceae went to [[Collection W|W]], the Cyperaceae (through Boeckeler) to [[Collection B|B]], the Filices via Kunze to [[Collection LZ|LZ]] (now destroyed, the grasses to Karl Müller, the Labiatae and Verbenaceae to J.A. Schmidt in Heidelberg, the Orobanchaceae to Fr. Schultz in Bitsch, the Meliaceae, Anonaceae, Melastomataceae, Bombacaceae, Ternstroemiaceae to Sonder (now [[Collection MEL|MEL]]), the Amaryllidaceae to Schnizlein), the Lichenes to Meisner ([[Collection BAS|BAS]] or [[Collection NY|NY]]). Even after this rigorous impoverishment a considerable portion remained and was acquired in 1853 by Karl Müller in Halle. The Müller-Sprengel herbarium (12.000 species) was bought by Berlin ([[Collection B|B]]) in 1890, and is now no longer extant. A certain number of specimens, however, (240) is in the Willdenow herbarium and the Pteridophytes have also been preserved. Further material is at [[Collection BP|BP]], [[Collection FI|FI]], [[Collection G|G]], [[Collection GOET|GOET]] (some lich.), [[Collection H|H]]-Ach (lich.), [[Collection L|L]] (some musci and algae), [[Collection LD|LD]] (200, herb. Retzius), [[Collection LE|LE]], [[Collection PH|PH]], [[Collection PR|PR]]. According to Urban (1891) the part of the Sprengel herbarium acquired by B in 1890 contained material from Balbis, Baumgarten, Bertero, Besser, Defile, Detharding, Dewey, Forster, Gussone, Lamarck, Ledebour, Moris, Nuttall, Pollini, Rottler, Schiede & Deppe, Schott, Sellow, Sieber, Torrey, Weihe and Zèyher. – *Letters* e.g. at [[Collection G|G]], [[Collection HAL|HAL]].

#### Note
- (1) Kurt Sprengel was the son of the Berlin teacher, theologian and natural scientist Joachim Friedrich Sprengel whose half-brother was Christian Konrad Sprengel (1750-1816). They were sons of Ernst Victor Sprengel (1686-1759) from different marriages (15 children in all, C.K. Sprengel being the youngest). Anton Sprengel (1803-1851) was a son of Kurt Sprengel; another son, Wilhelm Sprengel (1792-1828), defended a botanical dissertation of which the text was provided by the promotor (his father) and provided illustrations for various publications of K. Sprengel.
- (2) Joachim Friedrich Sprengel, Kurt Sprengel's father, wrote a *Vorstellung der Kräuterkunde in Gedächtnisstafeln*, Greifswald 1754. Qu. (n.v.).
- (3) Karl (Carl) Sprengel (1787 or 1787-1859), director of the agricultural college at Regenswalde, Pommerania (d. late Apr 1859), wrote "*Meine Erfahrungen im Gebiete der allgemeinen und speziellen Pflanzen-Cultur*, 2 vols., Leipzig (Baumgärtner) 1847-1850, 1: 1847, p. \[i\]-xii, \[1\]-345, \[346\], 2: 1850, p. \[i\]-xii, \[1\]-348. *Copy*: USDA.
- (4) For a planned *Vollständige Geschichte der Farrenkräuter* see Sprengel in H.A. Schrader, J. Bot. 1801(1): 425-431. This was to be a fully illustrated monograph of the Pteridophyta from "Equisetum to Isoetes". The book was too expensive in war-time and was never realized (G. Kraus 2: 48. 1894).
