Barnhart, *Bibliogaphy of John Kunkel Small* \[New York\] 1935, 15 p., privately published, gives the precise dates of all of Small's publications. – Small, in a letter to A.S. Hitchcock, in the copy of *Fl. s.e. U.S*., 1903, at US, wrote "I dated all prefaces ahead" so that they would indicate the actual date of publication. - (2) The New York Botanical Garden has also a typescript "John K. Small 'Record'" providing a curriculum vitae, a general bibliography, extracts of letters of appreciation and a list of new taxa published up to 1931. - (3) Nearly all of Small's books were published by himself at his own expense. During Small's time the NYBG policy was "never to publish any books written by members of the staff..." (J.H. Barnhart (1938, p. 67). Only some of the later books were handled by a commercial publisher (Science Press). The main reason for this policy was that the NYBG needed its limited publication funds for its own serial publications (Bulletin, Journal, Memoirs, N. Amer. Fl.). An announcement by Small of the "Descriptive floras and miscellanous papers" sold by him, with prices and brief descriptions, to be ordered from "John K. Small, 310 East 207th Street, New York, N.Y." is found e.g. in the reprint of his 1923 paper *The needle palm Rhapidophyllum hystrix*. A list of *Reports on Florida expeditions* published in various journals, is given on p. \[2-3\] of this same reprint. #### Eponymy *Smallanthus* Mackenzie (1933); *Smallia* Nieuwland (1913). ### Publications ##### n.12.114.
