Almborn): as emphasized by Skottsberg (preface, vol. 1, 1932) the work was first intended as a slightly revised translation of Kerner von Marilaun, *Pflanzenleben*, ed. 3 (TL-2/3599, 3600). When Skottsberg entered as chief editor (1928) most collaborators had been selected and had begun to work after these principles. However, Skottsberg soon found that "many important parts needed quite a new treatment". Therefore, he did not want to quote Kerner in the title. Vol. 1 (1932) can be regarded as a Swedish version of Kerner, essentially revised not the least as to the illustrations. On the other hand, vols. 2-5,(1934-1940) are an entirely new work. "There is not much reminding of Kerner, except some of the coloured plates" (Skottsberg, preface, vol. 2, 1934). Among these new contributions should be mentioned H. Svensson (*Cytology, Reproduction*), K.V.O. Dahlgren (*Botanical genetics*) and T.G. Halle (*Paleobotany*). These articles are outstanding in many respects and might well have been translated into English. However, some authors (especially Dahlgren) wrote more extensively than was foreseen (Skottsberg, preface, vol. 3, 1936). The result was that the first scope of the work could not be maintained. Skottsberg's own contribution (*Survey of the plant system*) had to be cut down (major part of vol. 5), especially as some parts (e.g. reproduction in cryptogams) had been treated by Svensson. Nevertheless, Skottsberg's system is largely original though, owing to the foreign language and the time of publication (during the war) it did not reach the attention outside Sweden as it should have deserved. *Växternas liv* had been planned to contain 6 vols., but several reasons, not the least the harsh economic climate caused by the war, led the publisher to conclude it with vol. 5. Vol. 6 would have dealt with *Plant geography* (a chapter which Skottsberg could have written better than anybody else) and *Plant ecology* (incl. Plant sociology). It should be added that some botanists (Ingelström, Nilsson-Leissner, Palm, von Post and Simmons) quoted as collaborators in the title-pages of the first 4 vols. were omitted in vol. 5 as they gave no contributions. Lagerberg is mentioned also in vol. 5 though he is not the author of any article. The work became much appreciated, as well by professional botanists as among the general public. It soon became out of print. In the beginning of the 1950's a publisher in Malmö bought the copyright from the publisher in Stockholm and reissued *Växternas liv, andrà upplagan*, in 11 vols. (1953-1956). Vol. 1 which was advertised at a special low price was reprinted in 1958. Except a brief preface by the new publisher (vol. 1, 1953), new pagination and new years of printing, there are no changes at all in text and illustrations. However, the inactive "collaborators" (cf. above) were omitted from all t.p.'s. Skottsberg protested in vain against the new publisher's quoting him (without asking him) as chief editor of this "2nd edition". He rightly emphasized that several chapters, especially Physiology, Genetics and Paleobotany, were outdated after twenty-five years. However, as he had no copyright, he had no legal possibility of intervening. The "Second edition" was also sold out, in spite of its shortcomings, as it was offered at a fairly low price. Both versions are now very rare and much sought after. The Malmö publisher's hope (preface, Mar 1953) "that in the reasonably near future, it will be possible to issue supplements, containing recent advances in the field of botany, sold at the same low prices" has never been realized. *Note* (by B. Peterson): Preparations for a volume dealing with plant geography and plant sociology were made already at an early stage of the publication of Växternas liv. Obviously this part was planned to be rather comprehensive and several chapters were written. A great deal was already in hand as galley proof and even as page proof. To a large extent S. wrote this chapter by himself but contributions were left also by co-workers. For several reasons the volume on plant geography was never issued. Parts of the manuscipt and of the proofs have been taken care of. They are now kept at the Department of Ecological Botany, University of Umeå. ##### n.12.080.
