Sherard, William (1659-1728), British botanist; studied law at Oxford (St. John's College, B.C.L. 1683), botany in Paris (under J.P. Tournefort, 1686-1688) and Leiden (with P. Hermann 1688-1689); in Ireland 1690-1694; D. C.L. Oxford 1694; consul at Smyrna 1702-1716; collecting in Greece and Asia minor; founded a chair of botany at Oxford of which J.J. Dillenius was the first occupant.
