Göttingen 1789; traveller in the Orient and Africa 1802-1811. **Abbreviated name**: *Seetzen* \[standard form in IPNI: *Seetzen*\] #### Herbarium and types Some material (phan., lich.) at [[Collection H|H]]. – A note in Bot. Zeit. (15: 64. 1857) states that the remains of Seetzen's Orient herbarium at Gotha would be handed to H.G.L. Reichenbach at Leipzig; however, this was never realized; the specimens were in very poor shape (see Kruse (1859) in note below). #### Bibliography and biography Barnhart 3: 256 (b. 30 Jan 1767, d. 8 Sep 1811); BM 4: 1893; CSP 5: 623-624; De Toni 1: cxv; Dryander 3: 128, 425, 654; LS 24581; PR 8585, ed. 1: 9530; Rehder 1: 202, 4: 159; Tucker 1: 644. #### Biofile - Anon., Bonplandia 5: 225. 1857 (herb. at Gotha to H.G.L. Kruse, in collaboration with Hinrichs, by G.Fr. Hermann Müller and H.L. Fleischer: "Ulrich Jasper Seetzen's *Reisen durch Syrien, Palästina, Phönicien, die Transjordan-Länder, Arabia petraea und Unter-Aegypten*, 4 vols. Berlin (G. Reimer) 1854-1859, (copy: U). The account contains little botany; the explanation is given in vol. 4 (commentary by Kruse and Fleischer) on p. xxvii (and in 1: xliv): "Die von Seetzen geschickten Pflanzen fand ich \[Kruse\]... in einem sehr traurigen Zustande...". An attempt to have them identified by H.G.L. Reichenbach failed. *Copies*: LC, NSUB, U-UB. – See also his *A brief account of the countries adjoining the Lake of Tiberus*...
