Deutschl. ed. 3*. **Notes** *Authors, editors, artist*: Ernst Schenk (1796-1859) provided the plates (col. copper engr.); D.F.L. von Schlechtendal is listed as the senior author (in addition to Schenk) for vols. 1 and 2. From vol. 3, 1846 onward C.E. Langethal is listed as the second author. it is generally assumed (but we have no proof of this) that Schlechtendal actually wrote the texts for vols. 1 and 2, and little, if any, of the other volumes. Even so his name appears on the title pages of all volumes as senior author. The question of the real authorship remains unsolved. *Publ*.: 22 volumes, each with 128 plates with text, published in Lieferungen of 8 plates (16 per volume, 2816 in all). According to Pritzel ed. 1 was published between 1840 and 1873 in 24 volumes, each volume in 12 Lief. of 10 plates.
