Letter to H. Schindler (1979) of 2 Mar 1946: "Beim 3. Angriff am 14.2.45 Mittags war unser Haus nicht mehr zu retten, es brannte aus bis in die Keller hinab. Bis auf einen Handwagen, 2 Luftschutzkoffer und Rücksäcke, ein Gedeck Betten und einige Kleidungsstücke ist alles restlos verbrannt: Bücherei, Separate, Herbarien... Mikroskop, sonstige Apparate usw. usw.". – German lichenology was excessively hit by World-War II: the lichen collection at Berlin-Dahlem (B) was destroyed; the private collections of Hillmann, Klement, Sandstede and Schade were all lost or abducted \[sic\].
