Sauter's brother, Andreas Sauter (b. 20 Aug 1802, d. 15 Jul 1872) was also an active botanist, forester at Zirl, Bozen and Ried, ultimately "Bergrath" in Hall. Andreas S. distributed exsiccatae, e.g. *Decaden getrockneter Alpenpflanzen* and *Flora tirolensis exsiccata alpina atque subalpina* dec. 1-6, 1830-1833. Ferdinand Sauter (b. 14 Dec 1835) was a son of A.E. Sauter; he was also a practicing physician and an active botanist who collected widely in Tirol and was especially interested in Bryophyta. The present data in the Index herbariorum files do not allow us to differentiate between the three Sauters in the listing of holdings by herbaria. #### Bibliography and biography AG 3: 725, 12(1): 144, 12(2): 118; Backer p. 660; Barnhart 3: 215 (b. 19 Apr 1800, d. 6 Apr 1881); BFM 846; Biol.-Dokum. 15: 7867; BM 4: 1812; Bossert p. 350; CSP 5: 416-417, 8: 837, 11: 289, 12: 651; De Toni 1: cx; DTS 1: 256-261, 6(4): 192 (bibl.); GR p. 439; GR, cat p. 71; Hegi 4(1): 375, 6(2): 1213; Hortus 3: 1203; IH 2: (files); 103; Jackson p. 269; Kew 4: 603; LS 23723-23739; MD p. 212; Morren ed. 2, p. 14; Nordstedt p. 28; PR 8053-8054, 10632-10634, ed. 1: 9008; Rehder 5: 761; SBC p. 131; TL-2/2847; WU 28: 288-290. 1874. #### Biofile - Anon., Bonplandia 4: 134. 1856, 8: 34. 1860; Bot.
