##### n.9817. Botany at the Rochester meeting
**Title**
*Botany at the Rochester meeting* of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. \[Reprinted from the Bulletin of Pharmacy, December 1892\].
**Notes**
*Publ*.: Dec 1892, p. \[1\]-23. *Copy*: G. Reprinted from Bull. Pharm. 6(12): 652-658. Dec 1892. – Contains a report by Rusby on the basic proposals put forward by American botanists on 19 Aug 1892 at the Rochester meeting of the A.A.A.S. in reply to O. Kuntze's Rev. gen. pl. of 1891 and the proposals made in 1892 by P. Ascherson, A. Engler, K. Schumann and I. Urban. The German proposals were:
1. starting point generic names 1752/1753.
2. nomina nuda and semi-nuda to be rejected.
3. similar names differing in the last syllable to be retained.
4. proposal to set up a list of nomina conservanda.
The Rochester answer (proposed by H.H. Rusby, N.L. Britton, J.M. Coulter, F.W. Coville, L.M. Underwood, L.F. Ward, and W.A. Kellerman) accepted points 1-3 in its own rules affirming the 1867 Paris code with the following restrictions: 1. priority is fundamental.
2. starting point 1753, Linnaeus, *Species plantarum*.
3. specific epithets to be retained on transfer (negation of the Kew Rule). 4. absolute homonym rule; later homonym always to be rejected.
5. publication of generic names by (1) distr. printed matter of description; (2) by citation of the name with citation of included species with or without diagnosis. 6: publication of specific names by (1) distr. as in 5, (2) publishing a binomial with reference to a previously publ. species.
7. similar generic names do not differ necessarily when ending differs; they are to be rejected if they differ slightly in the spelling.
8. citation in parenthesis of author of epithet in original combination.
