Ortega and A. Palau; leader of the Spanish *Expedición botánica* of 1777-1788 to the vice-kingdom of Peru (now Peru & Chile). **Abbreviated name**: *Ruiz* \[standard form in IPNI: *Ruiz*\] #### Herbarium and types [[Collection MA|MA]]. – Some of the collections were perhaps dispersed in later years by Pavon without retaining the originals at [[Collection MA|MA]]. The main part of the important set sold to Lambert is now at [[Collection BM|BM]]. Other significant sets are at [[Collection B|B]]-Willd., [[Collection B|B]] (see Lack 1979), [[Collection FI|FI]], [[Collection G|G]], [[Collection OXF|OXF]] and [[Collection US|US]]. Other material at [[Collection AMES|AMES]], [[Collection CGE|CGE]], [[Collection F|F]], [[Collection FW|FW]], [[Collection G|G]], [[Collection H|H]], [[Collection HAL|HAL]], [[Collection K|K]], [[Collection M|M]], [[Collection MO|MO]], [[Collection MPU|MPU]], [[Collection NY|NY]], [[Collection W|W]]. For details on Lambert's set of Ruiz materials see H.S. Miller (1970). Pavon also sold to Lambert some of the manuscripts of the Flora, a copy of the itinerary and manuscripts on Cinchona. These manuscripts are also at [[Collection BM|BM]], but other manuscripts arc still at [[Collection MA|MA]]. #### Bibliography and biography AG 4: 865; Backer p. 503 (epon.); Barnhart 3: 191; BM 4: 1765, 8: 1110; Bossert p. 342; Clokic p. 235; Colmeiro 1: clxxx; Colmciro penins. p. 135; CSP 5: 326; De Toni 1: cxix; Dryander 3: 190; DSB 11: 605-606; Frank 3 (Anh.): 86; GF p. 74; Henrcy 2: 35, 36, 3: 109; Herder p. 226; Hortus 3: 1203; IF p. 727; IH 1 (ed. 2): 51, 78, 92, (cd. 3): 62, 98, 117, (ed. 6): 363, (ed. 7): 341, 2: (files); Jackson p. 127, 377; Kew 4: 546-547; Langman p. 656; Lasègue p. 244-247, sec also p. 581 (index); NI 1698-1699, 3: 58-59; PR 7891-7903, 5011, 6859, ed. 1: 5508, 7660, 8854-8866; Rehder 1: 340, 346, 5: 745; RS p. 138; TL-1/1123-1125, see J.F. Fol. **Abbreviated title**: *Fl. peruv. prodr.* **Notes** *Co-author*: José Antonio Pavon (1754-1844). *Publ*.: early Oct 1794, p. \[i\*-iii\*\], i-xxii, 1-153, \[154, err.\], *pl. 1-37* (uncol. copp. Isidorus Galvez del.). *Copies*: FI, G, MO, NY, PH, Teyler, USDA; IDC 1293. The best testimony on the publication of Ruiz and Pavon's *Prodromus* is that by A. J. Cavanilles, who wrote to James Smith on 14 October 1794 that the book was ready and that it had been presented to the King. This agrees with Steele's statement (1964, p. 232) that the book was ready for distribution in September and that a few copies found their way shortly into other hands. It is at any rate certain that Cavanilles saw a copy in October 1794, and obtained one later. Cavanilles refers to the *Prodromus* in the preface to his *Icones* vol. 3, dated lo January 1795. Furthermore a copy arrived in Rome early in 1795 (Steele 1964). Although the "distribution" was extremely limited, it must be assumed that the book was available as at present required by the *International Code of Botanical Nomenclature* (Art. 29.l, ed. 1978) from the date of the presentation to the King onward (early October 1794). Shortly afterwards, however, the release of the book was stopped, probably because of various intrigues caused by unpleasant local botanical competition. A few copies were sent abroad by the Spanish government in 1795, but the bulk (567 copies) was released only on 13 June 1796 (Steele p. 233, footnote 26). The copy that had reached Italy early 1795, came into the hands of Gaspar Xuárez, a botanist residing in Rome, but a native of Tucumán (Argentina). With the permission of Ruiz, Xuárez started the preparation of a new edition of the *Prodromus* in order to rescue it from oblivion. The Xuárez edition, which is in Latin only, contains several corrections and many taxonomic and historical notes. It was published in 1797 and is now extremely rare. Sir Joseph Banks's copy (British Museum, Bloomsbury) and the copy at the New York Botanical Garden are among the very few copies known outside Italy. An extensive review of this edition was published by Schrader (1799). Reviews of the original edition were few, if any, owing to the exceptional circumstances of its distribution. Pritzel (Thesaurus no. 7894) mentions the presence, in the Delessert copy (now at Genève), of an additional plate with description of the genus *Beauharnoisia*. This plate seems to be unique. The genus *Beauharnoisia* Ruiz and Pavon is usually dated from its publication in the *Annales du Muséum d'Histoire naturelle* 11: 71-73. *t. g.* 1808.
