They were captured from the French in May 1803 and acquired by Rudge and Lambert. Circa 400 Martin specimens were bought by BM at the Lambert sale; another 772 were included in Rudge's herbarium. Stearn and Williams (1957) give a list of the plants described by Rudge with indication of types and synonymy. Rudge's own herbarium, consisting of 4318 specimens (in addition to the Martin specimens) was presented to [[Collection BM|BM]] in 1847. It contained e.g. Dickson's exsiccatae, Fuci from Dawson Turner, Ericae from R.A. Salisbury. Some further specimens from Rudge's herbarium (not collected by him) are at [[Collection FI|FI]]. #### Bibliography and biography Backer p. 502 (epon.); Barnhart 3: 188; BB p. 264; BM 4: 1760; CSP 5: 322, 6: 751; Desmond p. 534 (b. 27 Jun 1763, d. 3 Sep 1846); DNB 49: 383-384; GF p. 74; Herder p. 226; Hortus 3: 1203; IF p. 727; Jackson p. 375; Kew 4: 543; NI 1695-1696, 1695n; PR 7875, ed. 1: 8836; Rehder 1: 338, 500, 2: 356; TL-1/1122; Tucker 1: 612; Zander ed. 10, p. 709, ed. 11, p. 809. #### Biofile - Allibone, S.A., Crit. dict.
