Cum characteribus, differentiis et synonymiis, editio nova, speciebus inde ab editione xv. detectis aucta et locupletata. Curantibus Joanne Jacobo Roemer,... et Jos. Augusto Schultes,... volumen primum \[-septimum\]. Stuttgardtiae (sumtibus J.G. Cottae) 1817 \[-1830\]. 7 vols. Oct. **Abbreviated title**: *Syst. veg.* **Notes** *Systema vegetabilium*, see TL-2/3, P. 77 (no. 4709), The botanical part of the post-linnaean editions of the *Systema naturae* were frequently published in amended form as *Systema vegetabilium*. The Roemer and Schultes edition refers in its title to ed. 15 (by J.A. Murray, TL-2/6578), counts as ed. 16 and precedes that of K.P.J. Sprengel (1825-1828), which itself is also called ed. 16 but which should count as ed. 17. The numbering, however, is not important; citation should be to Roemer and Schultes, *Syst. veg.* *Authorship*: Original author: Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778). *Co-author*, with J.J. Roemer, of this edition: Josef August Schultes (1773-1831), for volumes 1-4. J.A. Schultes continued the book after Roemer's death and is the author of vols. 5 and 6, except for the Umbelliferae in 6: 315-628 which are by K.P.J. Sprengel, and of some special entries attributed to other authors, such as A.W. Roth. Volume 7 was authored by J.A. Schultes and Julius Herman Schultes (1804-1840). These authors also published the *Mantissa* in *volumen primum* \[*secundum, tertium*\] *systematis vegetabilium*... ex editione Joan. Jac. Roemer... et Jos. Aug. Schultes, which is treated under J.A. Schultes (Mant. 1 and 2 by J.A. Schultes; Mant. 3 J.H. Schultes co-author). *Note on J.A. Schultes*: The indication " Boio" after J.A. Schultes' name on the title pages of the earlier volumes refers to Landishuti bojorum (Landshut in S. Bavaria), where Schultes was professor of botany at the University. This University was still at Ingolstadt when Schultes joined it, from 1800-1826 it was at Landshut; after this it went to München. The indication "bojorum" refers to the Boji, a celtic people in Central Europe and Italy in Roman and pre-Roman time, which had settlements in Bavaria and Bohemia. *Publ*.: in 7 vols., 1817-1830 (for origin of dates as given below see TL-1/1097). *Copies*: BR, G, H, HH, MO, NY, PH, U, US(3), USDA; IDC 238. – Roemer and Schultes. included various contributions by other authors in their work, such as A.W. Roth, whose new taxa, published in his *Novae plantarum species*, were in part pre-published in "Roemer et Schultes" who had a manuscript copy of Roth's book available to them (see 1: xix; inf. Robert Faden). Another situation is described by McVaugh (1955): D.F.L. von Schlechtendal made the Willdenow herbarium at Berlin accessible to Roemer and Schultes (see 3: vi), and from vol. 3 on the *Syst. veg.* contains new descriptions based on material from B-Willd., in particular from Humboldt and Bonpland. Such taxa described by Roemer and Schultes in vol. 3 often antidate publication by C.S. Kunth in the *Nova genera* (see McVaugh for further details, and see e.g. Kunth, Linnaea 5: 366-369. 1830 for the reverse situation).
