Ray, John (until 1669: Wray) (1627-1705), British naturalist; studied theology at Cambridge, fellow of Trinity College 1649-1662, MA Cambridge 1651, travelled widely in England; in continental Europe (1663-1666) "father" of British botany. F.R.S. 1667.
**Abbreviated name**: *Ray* \[standard form in IPNI: *Ray*\]
#### Herbarium and types
[[Collection BM|BM]] (20 vols.); British material also at [[Collection NOT|NOT]]. The herbarium at [[Collection BM|BM]] contains mainly European plants collected by Ray in the years 1663-1665, and is the basis of the *Stirpium Europaearum Sylloge* of 1694. It was given by Ray to Samuel Dale, who in turn bequeathed it to the Apothecaries Company; donated to [[Collection BM|BM]] 1862.
This "Hortus siccus" consists of 20 books, each containing ca. 30 plants sewn on to the paper. Most of these specimens were collected on Ray's continental tour but some are by others: Matthew Dodsworth, George Wheler, Hans Sloane (see Dandy 1957). For sources, manuscripts et. see Raven pp. xii-xv. For Sherard's contribution in specimens to the *Historia* see Clokie.
