Erlangen 1778; practicing physician at Vegesack nr. Bremen from 1779; regional physician from 1781. **Abbreviated name**: *Rath* \[standard form in IPNI: *Roth*\] #### Herbarium and types [[Collection B|B]], [[Collection B|B]]-Willd.; other material at [[Collection BM|BM]], [[Collection BREM|BREM]] (bryo.), [[Collection DUIS|DUIS]], [[Collection FH|FH]], [[Collection GOET|GOET]], [[Collection HAL|HAL]], [[Collection JE|JE]], [[Collection LD|LD]], [[Collection M|M]], [[Collection PH|PH]] (algae), [[Collection S|S]], [[Collection TCD|TCD]], [[Collection W|W]], [[Collection WELT|WELT]]. – Roth's main herbarium of some 20.000 specimens went originally to the Natural History Museum at Oldenburg (Germany). It was transferred to [[Collection B|B]] in 1925/1926, where it was incorporated in the main herbarium which was for the greater part destroyed in 1943. However, the Roth material in the Willdenow herbarium, the pteridophytes and several types are extant. Roth issued exsiccatae: "*Herbarium vivum plantarum officinalium*, nebst einer Anweisung, Pflanzen zum medicinischen Gebrauche zu sammeln" 8 Hefte, Hannover 1785-1787 (for details see Buchenau 1868). – For his *Herbarium vivum plantarum officinalium* see e.g. Hertel (1982). #### Note A.W. Roth's son, C.W. Roth (1810-1881) published on agricultural botany and issued a series of exsiccatae *Landwirtschaftliche Pflanzensammlung*, see GR p. 126. #### Bibliography and biography ADB 29: 305 (W.O.
