### Author
Plumier, Charles (1646-1704), French missionary, explorer and botanist; travelled in the West Indies 1689, 1693 and 1695.
**Abbreviated name**: *Plum.* \[standard form in IPNI: *Plum.*\]
#### Herbarium
P (local, of little importance). The types of Plumier's American plants are his original drawings. Further elucidation is provided, in part, by Sudan's herbarium (see sub Surian); in several cases the Surian plants may be the actual types of Plumier species.
#### Manuscripts and drawings
The Plumier manuscripts and drawings often referred to by Adanson and Jussieu are the ca. 6000 original drawings made by Plumier which are now kept at the Muséum d'Histoire naturelle. This Plumier collection of drawings was originally at the Bibliothèque nationale which incorporates the holdings of the old Cabinet des Estampes du Roi. Since 22 Oct 1834 they have been at the *Bibliothèque centrale* of the Paris Muséum and constitute ms. 1-37, 1335. – The Groningen (University library) set of 508 copies was made by Claude Aubriet for Boerhaave in 1733, and used by Burman for the preparation of the *Plantarum americanarum fasciculus* (1-10) (262 plates published). The set was seen by Linnaeus during his stay in Holland. – Another set of copies (312) was acquired by Lord Bute and is now at BM (through Banks, Banksian ms. 1-5). An uncoloured set of copies of Plumier's drawings together with transcripts of descriptions is at K; a further set is at OXF. Clokie (1964) states that Vaillant "employed a draughtsman to copy Plumier's drawings after his death, and sold them to his friends". The correspondence between Vaillant and Sherard at OXF reveals that Sherard also bought such copies.
