The book was received at Regensburg in Mar 1844; and p. x is dated 24 Feb 1844, which would put the date of publication at 24-28 Feb or Mar 1844; Schlechtendal reviewed it for Bot. Zeit. only on 9 Mai 1845 (Bot. Zeit. 3: 326-327). A further copy is at FI. #### Name We have not been able to establish the order of the Christian names given to Pfeiffer when he was baptized. He himself signed himself Louis but also Ludwig Pfeiffer in print and (in so far as we know) in correspondence. The Louis was latinized to Ludovicus in Latin book titles. The names appear as Carl Georg Ludwig (in necrology in Hessische Morgenzeitung, hence quite possibly authentic), Karl Georg Ludwig, Ludwig Georg Karl and Ludwig Karl Georg (Karl also as Carl). We have no indication how Pfeiffer was baptized but follow his own apparent preference for "Louis", at any rate in his earlier publications (at least until 1855). A.L. All other copies lack this preface which is of especial interest because Pfeiffer often indicates *type-species* for generic names which constitute in many cases the first selection of a lectotype. In this "praefatio" he states: "species plantarum in libro meo omnio negliguntur, excepta indicatione illarum, quae typum generis novi aut novo modo circumscripti vel sectionis offerunt." German version ("Vorwort"): "Einzelne Arten sind nur dann genannt, wenn Sie als Typus neuer Gattungen oder Abtheilungen dienen." \[Single species are mentioned only when they serve as type of new genera or sections\]. Hence Pfeiffer is the first reference book to indicate type species in the sense of the International Code of Nomenclature in a more or less systematic way. In case Pfeiffer's choice can be shown to have been erroneous or based on a misinterpretation of the protologue it can of course be overruled as provided for by ICBN 8.1. – The book is an extremely important index of all names of taxa above the rank of species published up till 1858; it not only provides references to first uses, but also to later usage which often provides an opportunity to establish the date and place of valid publication of names so far cited with a reference to a non-valid publication.
