Smith (1798, *nom. cons.*); *Persoonia* Willdenow (1799); *Persooniana* Britzelmayr (1897); *Persooniella* H. Sydow (1922); (journal): *Persoonia*; a mycological journal. Leiden. Vol. 1-x. 1959-x. #### Note The date of birth of Persoon has not been established with certainty. It is likely that he was born on 31 Dec 1761, but Franken (1937), who consulted much original material, accepts 31 Dec 1762. Lütjeharms (1936) is also of the opinion that 31 Dec 1762 is probable but does not even exclude 1 Jan 1763. Verduyn de Boer (1937) and Donk (DSB 10: 530), however, accept 31 Dec 1761. Verwoerd (in Lloyd 1924), who was the first author to accept this date, deduced it from the Government Gazette (Cape Archives) of Friday 10 Mar 1837 ("died, at Paris, on the 16th of November, 1836, age 74 years, 10 months, and 16 days, Christiaan Hendrik Persoon,...") signed by his sister, J.M. Storm, born Persoon). Persoon's mother was not a "Hottentot", a misunderstanding by Fée of the notion "Afrikaner" often repeated in the literature. Actually she was a Cape-born woman, Elsie \[Elizabeth\] Wilhelmina Groenewald, who had a Cape-Dutch father (Johannes G.) and mother (Margareta Hatting). Persoon's father, Christiaan Daniel, was born in Usedom, Pommerania, Germany (orig. Persohn), Persoon's mother died May 1763. The Gymnasium (then still called Seminarium) at Lingen, Germany where Persoon received his secondary education was the same as that where F.A.W. Miquel went to school in 1828-1829. #### Handwriting Lloyd, C.G., Mycol.
