"The parts were issued near the first of each month, each has a roman numeral giving the number of the part at the foot of its first page, while garden operations for the month of issue are described on its last pages. Hence the contents and date of each part can be deduced with little trouble"(W.T. Stearn). Vol. 12 was published e.g. from Feb 1845-Jan 1846, vol. 13, Feb 1846-Jan 1847.
The series contains 723 coloured plates hors texte (copper engravings and lithographs) as well as woodcuts in the text. The artists were F.W. Smith (engravings), S. Holden (lithographs) and C.J. Flemin and O. Jewitt (woodcuts). The numbers of plates quoted below are those of the NY copy. The copies do not always have all the plates: we are not certain that 723 is the exact number of plates issued.
