Hooker). **Abbreviated name**: *Parry* \[standard form in IPNI: *Parry*\] #### Herbarium and types [[Collection ISC|ISC]] (ca. 18.000; formerly at Davenport Academy of Natural Sciences); other important set at [[Collection US|US]]; further material at [[Collection BCL|BCL]], [[Collection BM|BM]], [[Collection BRU|BRU]], [[Collection C|C]], [[Collection CM|CM]], [[Collection DS|DS]], [[Collection E|E]], [[Collection F|F]], [[Collection FH|FH]], [[Collection FI|FI]], [[Collection G|G]], [[Collection GH|GH]], [[Collection IA|IA]], [[Collection K|K]], [[Collection LE|LE]], [[Collection M|M]] (lich.), [[Collection MICH|MICH]], [[Collection MO|MO]], [[Collection NA|NA]], [[Collection NEB|NEB]], [[Collection NY|NY]], [[Collection OXF|OXF]], [[Collection P|P]], [[Collection P|P]]-DU, [[Collection PH|PH]], [[Collection QPH|QPH]], [[Collection SD|SD]], [[Collection UC|UC]], [[Collection US|US]] (first set Mexic. Boundary Survey), [[Collection YU|YU]]. The herbarium left by Parry at his death (deposited in the Davenport Acad.), was arranged for sale by Mrs. E.R. Parry (Bot. Gaz. 16: 297). 1891; see also E.C. Parry 1891, for a catalogue) and contained 18.000 specimens. It was acquired by Iowa Agricultural College (US $ 5000. =). The herbarium at Davenport (Bot. Gaz. 15: 68. 1890) was the same as that acquired by ISC, and must have included a major early collection (erroneously said to have numbered 30.000 specimens) deposited at Davenport in the course of 1878 (Bull. Torrey bot. Club 6: 280. 1878, see also Parry (1878)). – Parry published only a fraction of the novelties discovered by him; his collections were worked up by J. Torrey (duplicates of his coll. of Mexican Boundary Survey 1849-1852 are therefore at [[Collection NY|NY]]), G. Engelmann, Asa Gray, E.L. Greene and S. Watson. – We are grateful to Mark L. Gabel (Dept. of Botany, Iowa State Univ.), Donald G. Herold (Davenport Public Museum, Iowa), Lyman Benson and Joseph Ewan for their help in establishing the history of the herbarium. – Letters by Parry are e.g. at [[Collection G|G]], [[Collection ISC|ISC]], [[Collection MO|MO]], [[Collection ND|ND]], and in the Smithsonian Archives. #### Bibliography and biography Backer p. 426; Barnhart 3: 52; BB p. 237; Bossert p. 301; Clokie p. 221; CSP 4: 767, 8: 565, 10: 994, 12: 358, 17: 717; DAB 14: 261-262 (by W.L.
