Leiden 1759; 1761-1766 working in Holland and England; to Russia 1767; from 1768-1774 in the Ural Mts. and Western Siberia; 1774-1793 in St. Petersburg; 1793-1794 in S. Russia and the Crimea; settled later in the Crimea 1795-1810; retired to Berlin 1810-1811. **Abbreviated name**: *Pall.* \[standard form in IPNI: *Pall.*\] #### Herbarium and types Pallas' main personal herbarium was sold during his lifetime to A.B. Lambert (Miller 1970). At the Lambert sale one part went to Robert Brown (now at [[Collection BM|BM]]), another part to William Robertson (now also at [[Collection BM|BM]]) whereas a third part was acquired by Babington probably for the Cambridge University herbarium (communication frm Mrs. H.P. Miller). There is indeed a set of Pallas plants at [[Collection CGE|CGE]] but the acquisition books mention nothing with respect to their provenance. In addition, however, there are about 660 specimens (species) of Russian and Siberian plants, collected by Pallas, in the Willdenow herbarium at [[Collection B|B]] (Urban-Berl.). These specimens were retained by Pallas after the sale of his herbarium to Lambert and were left to Willdenow. Further duplicates in [[Collection BM|BM]], [[Collection BR|BR]], [[Collection C|C]], [[Collection CAS|CAS]], [[Collection CGE|CGE]], [[Collection FI|FI]], [[Collection G|G]], [[Collection GJO|GJO]], [[Collection H|H]], [[Collection HAL|HAL]], [[Collection LD|LD]], [[Collection LE|LE]] (important set!), [[Collection LINN|LINN]], [[Collection LIV|LIV]], [[Collection LZ|LZ]], [[Collection M|M]], [[Collection MANCH|MANCH]], [[Collection MO|MO]], [[Collection MW|MW]], [[Collection OXF|OXF]], [[Collection S|S]], [[Collection SBT|SBT]], [[Collection UPS|UPS]], [[Collection W|W]]. – Some *letters* at [[Collection G|G]]. #### Note - (1) Pallas took part in the expedition which was sent out by the St. Petersburg academy, at the instigation of Catherine the Great, to make astronomical observations in connection with the conjunction of the Sun and Venus. Itinerary: Departure from St. Petersburg 21 Jun 1768, Moscow, Vladimir, Mourom, Arzamas, Kazan, Simbirsk (for the winter), March 1769 to Samara, Orenburg, Gourier, Caspian sea, back to Orenburg, Oufa (winter), 16 Mai 1770 over the Ural to Jekaterinenburg, Tchèliabinsk, Tobolsk, (Dec. 1771), Altai mountains, Omsk, Kolyvan, Tomsk, Krasnojarsk (7 March 1772 on to), Irkoutsk, Lake Baikal, Oudinsk, Sélinghinsk, Kiakhta, Amour River, Krasnojarsk (winter), Tara, Jaïtskoï-Gorodsk, Astrakhan, Tzaritzin, St. Petersburg, 30 July 1774. This journey is described in Pallas' *Reise*. From 1774-1793 Pallas resided mainly in St. Petersburg working e.g. on his *Flora rossica*. From 1793 to 1794 he made an official journey to Southern Russia and the Crimea. Leaving St. Petersburg on 1 February 1793, Pallas, accompanied by the artist Geissler, travelled to Tzaritzin, Sarepta and Astrakan. On 26 August 1793 he left Astrakhan for the Caucasus (Georgievsk, Pod-Kouma, Constantinogorsk, Bechtau Mountain), spent the winter in the Crimea and returned to St. Petersburg via Perekop, Kherson, and Nicolaïev. Apart from his botanical publications Pallas is known for his publications on the peoples of Mongolia. Pallas was in contact with many of his fellow botanists in W. Europe, such as Joseph Banks. #### Note - (2) A.B. Lambert acquired the Pallas herbarium in 1808 at a London auction. A copy of the catalogue of the auction, describing the collection, is at PH: "A catalogue of a valuable collection of antiquities, and natural history; consisting of... together with the superb herbarium of those celebrated botanists Pallas & Noezens;... which will be sold by auction by Messrs. King and Lochee,... on Monday, April 25, 1809, and three following days",... printed by J. Barker,... \[1808\], p. \[1\]-31. #### Bibliography and biography ADB 25: 81-98; AG 1: 214, 5(1): 169, 174, 178, 215, 6(2): 875; Backer p. 419; Barnhart 3: 43; BM 4: 1504-1505, 8: 973; Bossert p. 298; Bret. p. 311; Clokie p. 220; CSP 4: 743-744; Dawson p. 644-646, 950; De Toni 1: xcvi; Dryander 3: 126, 172, 174, 557; DSB 10: 283-284 (q.v. for modern Russian studies); DU 221-223; Frank 3 (Anh.): 74; GF p. 70; GR p. 36, *pl*. \[*16*\], cat. p. 69; Hegi 4(1): 155; Henrey 2: 36; Herder p. 469; Hortus 3: 1201 ("Pall."); HU nos. 662, 672, (2(2): 427-428, 436-439); IH 1 (ed. 7): 339, 2: (in press), Jackson p. 7, 113, 124, 326, 443; JW 4: 400; Kew 4: 215; Lasègue p. 578 \[index\]; LS 19726; MW p. 376, suppl. p. 275; NI 1482-1484, see also 1: 224, 2: 722, suppl. p. 54; Plesch p. 353-354; PR 2154, 6903-6908 (ed. 1: 7714-7722); Quenstedt p. 326-327; Reher 5: 645-646; RS p. 133; Sotheby 578, 579; TL-1/414, 942a-946, and see index; TL-2/2049, 2203, 2285 and see indexes; TR p. 211-214, nos. 1049-1062; Tucker 1: 535-536; Urban-Berl. p. 380, 412, 415; Zander ed. 10, p. 699, ed. 11, p. 797. #### Subject index to biofile *Bibliography*: Barlett (1949), Bourdeille (1892), Jackson (1900), Junk (1910-1913), Lipschitz (1975), Martini (1803), MacAtee (1949), Nissen (1969), Percheron (1837), Poggendorff (1863); see also section Biography and Bibliography above. *Biographical accounts*: Anon.
