The 12 (dated) monthly numbers of a year constituted a part, the parts of two years formed a volume, so that the publication was running on four series of numeration: 13 volumes, 26 parts, 312 monthly numbers, 312 plates, 1248 figures. There were two issues: "Large" (e.g. US copy, with engraved t.p.'s) and "Small" (e.g. NY copy; not always with engr. t.p.'s). The analysis given below is based on the copy at NY.
