### Author
Lamarck, Jean Baptiste Antoine Pierre Monnet de (1744-1829), French biologist; founder of the theory of evolution; 1761-1768 in French army; 1768-1778 bank employee in Paris; 1778-1793 botanist at the Jardin des Plantes; 1793-1829 professor of zoology at the Museum d'histoire naturelle
**Abbreviated name**: *Lam.* \[standard form in IPNI: *Lam.*\]
#### Herbarium and types
at [[Collection P|P]], kept as an *herbier historique* ([[Collection P|P]]-LA, on microfiche IDC no. 6207). Lamarck sold his herbarium to J. A. C. Roeper in 1824 who took it to Basel and Rostock. It was acquired by the University of Rostock in 1875 and offered to [[Collection P|P]] at Fr. 12.000 by Goebel who needed the money to buy laboratory equipment. (Goebel had first offered the collection to Kew but received too low a bid. He then approached Paris; the herbarium was received at Paris 17 Jan 1887). The collection consists of ca. 19.000 specimens. Lamarck's types are partly in his own herbarium, but, since he worked also with other collections, partly also in other herbaria, most of which are now at [[Collection P|P]] and [[Collection PC|PC]] (e.g. in [[Collection P|P]]-JU). Insofar as Lamarck based his descriptions of new species on material owned by L'Héritier or Lemonnier, his types are at [[Collection G|G]], Desfontaines in [[Collection FI|FI]], etc. The types of Lamarck and de Candolle's *Flore française* ed. 3 are in part at [[Collection G|G]]. Lamarck material is furthermore present at [[Collection B|B]]-W, [[Collection C|C]], [[Collection FI|FI]] and [[Collection G|G]].

*Publ*.: Entire work recorded as published on 21 Nov 1802 (JT) although the title-pages of all volumes have "An XI-1803". It is unlikely that at the time of the announcement of the work in the Journal typographique all 15 volumes were indeed available. Volumes 10, 11 and 12, for instance, are reviewed (as just published) in the Journ. phys. chim. hist. nat. 61: 77-78 (Jun-Jul 1805); 13 and 14 ibid. pp. 315-316 (Sep-Oct 1805). On the other hand the Botanische Zeitung (Regensburg) of 28 Mar 1803 reviews all 15 volumes even though only very briefly. Issues (fide JT): I. Papier carré fin d'Angoulême, plates uncoloured, 2. papier idem, plates coloured, 3. papier vélin, plates uncoloured, 4. papier vélin, plates coloured. – Belongs to the *Suites à Buffon* accompanying the 18mo edition of Buffon, *Histoire naturelle classée* d'après le systême de Linné... par R. R. Castel, 80 vols., Paris 1801-1803. A "nouvelle édition" of the *Histoire naturelle des végétaux* of this edition was published in Paris, 1825. – The text of volumes 1 and 2 is by Lamarck, that of vols. 3-15 by Mirbel.
