August Thienemann (1882-1960), the founder of modern limnology, was a German (Thüringian) hydrobiologist and limnologist who studied at Greifswald, Innsbruck and Heidelberg; Dr. phil. Greifswald 1905; director of the biology department for fresh water fishery of the University of Münster 1907-1917, associate professor ib. 1909; on active service 1914-1916; director of the Biological Station ("Hydrologische Anstalt") of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft (now Max Planck Gesellschaft) 1917-1957; in addition ordinary professor at Kiel 1924, founder of the International Association of theoretical and applied Limnology 1922; in charge of the "Deutsche limnologische Sunda Expedition" 1928-1929.
