The Stanford Alumni Directory of 1904 lists him as "capitalist" and "amateur botanist" (Thomas 1959), at a time in which neither of these denominations were derogatory. Knoche brought together a considerable library which contained e.g. the private reprint collection of Adolf Engler, purchased in 1930, (25.000 items).
