Volkens, in his obituary of Schumann in Ber. deut. bot. Ges. (1904), poses the question how Schumann's great productivity can be explained. He had many administrative-technical responsibilities as curator of the Berlin Botanical Museum in its old location, overfilled at a time of a rapidly increasing stream of material from all corners of the world. A really convincing and comprehensive answer is not possible. Schumann's creative urge and scientific inquisitiveness never relaxed and the solution can also be found in "seiner gewissenhaften Innehaltung eines täglichen Arbeitspensums" in many ways comparable with his only seven years older colleague and director Adolf Engler; Volkens: "The solution is to be found in his creative impulse,... and in his conscientious desire to crowd into his daily task the full force of his intellectual activities". #### Thesis Dickenwachstum und Cambium.
