Whipple (from Fort Smith, Arkansas to San Pedro, California 1853), collected further in California 1853, returned to eastern North America 1853 (c.q. 1854) and took up his practice in Lancaster, Ohio, removed to Detroit ca. 1860-1861 as professor of botany and pharmacy at Detroit Medical College, from 1868 surgeon to the Marine Hospital in Detroit. **Abbreviated name**: *J.M.
