Townsend, John Kirk (1809-1851), American naturalist, especially interested in ornithology; collected plants on a journey with Th. Nuttall west of the Mississippi river; travelled also in the Sandwich Islands and South America; in charge of the Ornithological Department of the Smithsonian Institution and a member of the Philadelphia Academy of Sciences.
