Drayton, John (1767-1822), American botanist, born 22 Jun 1767 at Charleston, South Carolina, studied law, admitted to the bar at twenty-one, practicing as an attorney in Charleston until 1794, member of the state constitutional convention in 1790, for more than thirty years mainly in public service, lieutenant-governor 1800-1802, governor 1803-1808, state senator 1809-1810, again until 1822 judge of the U.S. court S. Carolina, died 27 Nov 1822 at Charleston.
