### Author
Commelijn \[Commelin\], Jan (1629-1692), Netherlands druggist, merchant and botanist, uncle of Caspar Commelin.
**Abbreviated name**: *J. Commelijn* \[standard form in IPNI: *J.Commelijn*\]
#### Herbarium and types
Some specimens in the Sloane herbarium (now at [[Collection BM|BM]]) – Original drawings for *Horti medici Amstelodamensis* at [[Collection AMS|AMS]] \[[[Collection AMD|AMD]]?\].
*Ref*.: Dandy, The Sloane herbarium 116. 1958.
#### Note on name
Johannes Commelijn was baptized on 27 Jul 1629 in the pleterskerk at Leiden. The original spelling is Commelijn, spelled in capltals on the title-page of the Hesperides: Commelyn. The frequently used spelling Commelin contains a transcription of the Dutch ij by means of a single i. Johannes called himself Jan as well as Johannes in his later years. – The widely spread notion that Jan Commelijn was a professor at the Amsterdam Athenaeum is incorrect.
