Parry in voyages of 1819-1820, 1821-1823, 1824-1825 and 1827; commander of the antarctic expedition of 1839-1843 (botanist: J.D. Hooker); ultimately (1858) rear-admiral; nephew of Sir John Ross. **Abbreviated name**: *J.C. Ross* \[standard form in IPNI: *J.C.Ross*\] #### Herbarium and types [[Collection K|K]]; further material at [[Collection CGE|CGE]], [[Collection E|E]], [[Collection LD|LD]], [[Collection MO|MO]]. #### Notes (1) J.C. Ross made collections on several of his journeys; his main claim to fame in botany, however, is that he was in command of the antarctic expedition with the Erebus and Terror, 1839-1843, on which J.D. Hooker took part as a botanist. For Hooker's publications of the botanical results of this expedition see TL-2/2. For the various travelogues see e.g. BM 4: 1734; see also TL-2/2964-2965, 3009. - (2) Sir John Ross (1777-18156), J.C. Ross's uncle, was also an arctic explorer, e.g. in search of the North-West Passage 1818 and 1829-1833; author of TL-2/830, *Voy. explor. Baffin's Bay* an account of the 1819 expedition in which R. Brown published a *List of plants* (see e.g. Barnhart 3: 180, BM 4: 1734, Tucker 607; Allibone, S.A. Crit. dict. Engl. lit. 1874. 1878). #### Bibliography and biography AG 5(1): 772; Barnhart 3: 180 (b. 15 Apr 1800, d. 3 Apr 1862); BM 4: 1734; DNB 49: 265; Herder p. 58; PO 2: 698-699; PR 4199, 4228, 8734, ed. 1: 4638-4639, 4667; Rehder 1: 510; TL-2/2964-2965, 3009, see J.D.
