R. McVaugh informs us that the pagination of the part of volume 2 dealing with *Quercus* in the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture library (pp. 21-50) is different from that of most other copies (24-56). Furthermore pp. 49 and 50 seem to have been replaced in some copies by a more extensive text. Further information on the contents of the parts and on the history of the cancellations is desirable. Copies exist of volume 2 with title pages dated 1809 and 1813. The Mutis portrait was published with part 8. The plates are engravings after drawings by Turpin (some by Poiteau). All copies so far known to us have plain plates. The announcement of the work in JT (8: 374. 24 Jun 1805, livr. 1) mentions no issue with coloured plates, Humboldt's own copy (HL 4592) was also uncoloured; the two issues differ only in paper: "grand Jésus vélin" and "grand colombier" (both wove paper). We have seen no issue with coloured plates (GF p. 51). *Ref*.: Du 143; Löwenberg 94, 95; SK 1: clxxxix; Sotheby 377. - Sherborn and Woodward, J. Bot. 39: 203. 1901. - Dawson, W. (of qu. ed.): Weinheim (J. Cramer) 1963, text in 3 vols. Qu., plates combined in one folio volume. *Copies*: FAS, MICH. The quarto and the folio editions were published simultaneously, except that the entire folio text of vol. 4 was accessible to botanists at Paris from 26 Oct. 1818(Bull. Sci. Soc. Philom. 1819: 63). The text of the fourth volume ("Synanthérées") was distributed only in 1820, but was printed and finished by the end of 1818. The authors presented a copy to the Institut on 26 Oct 1818 which was accessible to the botanical public. At the same time copies were deposited with Sir Joseph Banks (London) and at the Berlin Academy of Sciences. Furthermore Kunth sent a copy to Cassini on 1 December 1818. The treatment of the Compositae by Kunth interfered to some extent with Cassini's publications and intentions. See Cassini (1819), Kunth (1819) and Adr. Jussieu (1850). Kunth was responsible for most of the text. The plates are mostly by Turpin, some by Humboldt, Kunth and A. Richard. The dates of presentation of the various parts to the Paris Academy and the dates given by JGLF confirm the schedule of publication as given by Sherborn and Woodward and Barnhart. The contents of some of the fascicles are still incompletely known. |vol. |part |folio
pages |quarto
pages |*plates* |dates| |--- |--- |--- |--- |--- |--- | |1 |1-2 |i-xlviii |i-lx |1-44 |29 Jan 1816| | | |1-120 |1-144| | |3 |121-200 |145-288 |45-70 |Mai 1816| | |4 |201-302 |289-377 |71-96 |late Aug 1816| |2 |5 |1-80 |1-96 |97-121 |28 Apr 1817| | |6 |81-152 |97-192 |122-146 |8 Dec 1817| | |7 |153-220 |193-280 |147-158, 162, 167-169, 172, 173 |Feb 1818| | |8 |221-324 |281-406 |159-161, 163, 164-166, 170, 171, 174-192 |8 Jun 1818| |3 |9 |1-72 |1-96 |193-217, t. 216 A. jun. |late Sep 1818| | |10 |73-148 |97-192 |218-242 |8 Feb 1819| | |11 |149-224 |193-288 |243-267 |9 Jul 1819| | |12 |225-296 |289-384 |267-292 |21 Nov 1819| | |13 |297-356 |385-456 |293-300, 216 A. cup. |13 Mar 1820| |4 |14 |1-56 |1-72 |301-325 |17 Apr 1820| | |15 |57-120 |73-152 |326-349 |22 Mai 1820| | |16 |121-168 |153-224? |350-374 |31 Jul 1820| | |17 |169-216 |225-288? |375-399 |18 Sep 1820| | |18 |217-247 |289-312 |400-412 |26 Dec 1820| |5 |19 |1-56 |1-64 |413-436(437?) |28 Mai 1821| | |20 |57-112 |65-128 |(438?) 437-460 (462?) |late Sep 1821| | |21 |113-176 |129-224 |(463?) 461-480 |25 Feb 1822| | |22 |177-236 |225-304 |481a-498 |Jun 1822| | |23 |237-338 |305-432 |499a-512 |24 Mar 1823| |6 |24 |1-108 |1-72 |513-522? |14 Apr 1823| | |25 |109-176 |73-168 |523-537 |6 Aug 1823| | |26 |177-236 |169-240 |538-552 |5 Jan 1824| | |27 |237-300 |241-320 |553-569? |Apr 1824| | |28 |301-360 |321-392 |570-585? |12 Jul 1824| | |29 |361-420 |393-542 |586-600? |Sep 1824| |7 |30 |1-48 |1-56 |601-615 |2 Nov 1824| | |31 |49-112 |57-144 |616-630 |20 Dec 1824| | |32 |113-176 |145-224 |631-645 |21 Feb 1825| | |33 |177-236 |225-296 |646-659bis |25 Apr 1825| | |34 |237-296 |297-376 |660-673 |13 Jun 1825| | |35 |297-356 |377-448 |674-690 |late Jul 1825| | |36 |357-399 |499-506 |691-700 |Nov 1825| NOTE: R. In view of the circumstance that the first references to Ruiz and Pavon's fourth volume date from 1830, it seems advisable to regard the publication by Kunth as the earlier one. *Ref*.: DU 145; GF p. 63; Löwenberg 101; NI 954; PR 4333 (ed. 1: 4776); RS p. 89; SK 1: cxc; Sotheby 377(3); IDC 214. - Cassini, J.
