Most of the specimens collected by or identified by Hudson now in various herbaria ([[Collection BM|BM]], [[Collection CGE|CGE]], [[Collection E|E]], [[Collection K|K]], [[Collection LINN|LINN]], [[Collection UPS|UPS]], in herb. Thunberg) are probably not those on which Hudson's original descriptions were based. Dixon assumes that the original herbarium was indeed totally lost when Hudson's house was destroyed by fire in 1783, caused "by the villany of a confidential servant" who burnt down the house to obtain a big sum of cash money kept there temporarily (J. E. Smith). The main part of the remaining Phanerogams is at [[Collection BM|BM]]. *Ref*.: Druce, G. C., Fl. Berkshire cxxxvii-cxxxix. 1897 (herbarium to BM via Apothecaries Company). - Dandy, J.
