### Author
Houstoun, William (1695-1733), British surgeon; studied at Leiden under Boerhaave; with the South Sea Company in C. America and W. Indies (1729-1733).
**Abbreviated name**: *Houst.* \[standard form in IPNI: *Houst.*\]
#### Herbarium and types
The Sloane herbarium ([[Collection BM|BM]]) contains plants collected by Houstoun, partly acquired through Philip Miller. Houstoun left to Miller "all his papers, drawings and a collection of dried plants." These collections were bought by Banks with the Miller herbarium in 1774 and are now at [[Collection BM|BM]]. See Ewan (1970) on a set of Houstoun specimens at San Francisco.

#### Note
Linnaeus frequently refers to Houstoun in the *Hortus cliffortianus* and in the various editions of the *Genera plantarum*. These names occur in unpublished Houstoun notes and engravings, given by P. Miller to Linnaeus in 1736 and entitled *Houstounia genera plantarum americanarum nova communicata per Phil. Millerum, Lond. 1736*, now at The Linnean Society, London. See W. T. Stearn, Intr. facsimile Linnaeus, *Gen. ed. 5* \[Weinheim 1960\] p. xxi. – Sir Joseph Banks later published *Reliquiae houstounianae* (see no. 3079). Further drawings by Houstoun in P. Miller, *Fig. pl.* (1: pl. xliv) and in J. Martyn, *Hist. pl. rar.* 1728.
