They had five children of whom Joseph Dalton Hooker is treated above. The eldest son, William Dawson Hooker (1816-1840), ornithologist and entomologist, wrote an inaugural dissertation on *Cinchona* (1839) (see e.g. PR ed. 1: 4641, 4642). #### Composite works - (1) J. E. Smith, *The English flora*, vol. 5, part I. (Mosses, Hepaticae, Lichens, Characeae and Algae), London 1833, by W. J. Hooker as vol. 2 of the "*British flora*". See under J. E. Smith. - (2) Botanical descriptions in W. Woodville, *Medical botany*, ed. 3, 5 vols. 1832, q.v. - (3) Musci, in W. Smith (1808, *nom. cons.*); *Hookeria* Schwägrichen (1816); *Hookeriopsis* (Bescherelle) Jaeger (1877); (journals): W. J. Hooker published a number of short-lived botanical journals, the first of which is *Journal of Botany*. London. Vol. 1-4. 1834-1842, often called (but not on the t.p.): *Hooker's Journal of Botany*. This was followed by *London Journal of Botany*. London. Vol. 1-7. 1844-1848, often called (but not on the t.p.): *Hooker's London Journal of Botany*. The third is *Hooker's Journal of Botany and Kew Garden Miscellany*. London. Vol. 1-9. 1849-1857. Hooker also started *Icones Plantarum*. London. Vol. 1-10. 1837-1864, which from Vol. 11. 1867 onwards is called *Hooker's Icones Plantarum*. ### Publications ##### n.2986. Gepp supposes that part 22 must have included, in addition to the four supplementary plates, the introduction, the synopsis, the title-page and the index. Besides the generally known quarto edition a few copies of folio size were issued (see e.g. Sotheby 356). – The dates given in TL 1 (no. 527) are those on which the parts were received by the publishers from the printers. Publication may often have taken place on the first of each month, e.g. part 1 on 1 Mai, etc. and it might be assumed (with Margadant, MD) that there were some exceptions: 12: 15 Apr 1813, 13: 15 Aug 1813, 14: 2 Oct 1813, 15 possibly indeed on 18 Dec 1813, 17: 15 Jul 1814, 18 possibly on 15 Jul 1815, 19 on 4 Dec 1815 and 22 on 15 Jun 1866. However, there are no firm indications that this was the case and the publishers could have started distribution immediately upon receipt (dates Gepp). A number of copies were issued on large paper (e.g. the Plesch copy). – Bohn announced a *reissue* in 1843 (see Bot. Zeit. 1: 36. 1843). See Margadant (MD) for a detailed bibliographical study. – FH has a set of proof plates \[*1-10, 12-20*, not numbered\] accompanied by text \[i, hand col. t.p. s.d.\], \[1\]-20; sent to Charles Lyell by W.J.H. with accompanying letter dated 30 Dec 1813. *Ref*.: MD p. 146-147; Gepp, J. This could perhaps be taken as regular publication, but it is probable that this was an incomplete copy, or even only a single specimen plate. An 1816 prospectus of J. Harding, appended to the KVA copy, mentions such "specimens of the work" and states that part 1 will be ready in May. The book was announced for sale in the JGE on 20 Nov 1816 (Sayre). On 25 Sep 1816 Beauvois acknowledges the receipt of the first instalment \[sic\] to W. J. Hooker (letter at K). – The book has neither title-page nor pagination and was published in a simple wrapper. Other bryophytes from the Humboldt collections were published in the *Musci exotici* (2990). See also Sayre (SY p. 51). ##### n.2989. Hooker (in a letter to A. P. de Candolle, 26 Oct 1817) describes the book as "to be published in numbers, of an octavo size & with plates uncoloured" (advertisement sheet included in part 4 fide Mr. John Collins of B. Quaritch Ltd., who also supplied additional information on the contents of the parts.) The dates on the wrappers of the octavo issue (copy: Regensburg; also established by Collins, Dixon and Margadant) are so close to the dates of receipt by the publishers (provided by Gepp) that there is no reason not to accept them (Art. 30 ICBN). – For an extensive bibliographical study with botanical notes see Margadant (MD). There may have been occasional delays in delivery (several of the later fascicles were reviewed rather late) but for all practical purposes the following dates may now be accepted. Margadant provides in addition many details on the plates, the artists and engravers, further collaborators (descriptions of plants were furnished by H. T. Colebrooke, R. Graham, J. The first ten volumes of the *Icones plantarum* were edited by William Jackson Hooker himself, although, in the later volumes, some of the texts were provided by other authors, notably Joseph Dalton Hooker. The volumes 1-4 constitute the first series, the numbers 5-10 the second series. The first eight volumes were published in two parts of fifty numbered plates each. Since every double plate received two numbers, however, the actual number of plates per part is often less than 50. The parts also received numbers which were consecutive throughout the major part of the series. Since no copy in original covers is known to us, several of the details provided on these covers are as yet unknown. From the reviews of parts 11-16 it is almost certain that the dates as given below figured on the covers. Without evidence to the contrary they can be taken as the dates of publication although there may have been occasional delays. Volume 9 was published in smaller parts (10-22?) of circa 8 plates. These parts were to be published monthly (W.J. Hooker, London Journ. Bot. 3: 128. Apr 1851), but it is clear that this was not kept up because the publisher, Reeve, presented part 26 (probably part 10 of the volume) to the Linnean Society on 1 April 1852; part 27 was presented on 1 Sep 1852. It is possible that this was the last \[or last but one?\] part. The copy of vol. 9 at The New York Botanical Garden has an anonymous annotation "from fascicle covers" that plates 801-888 were published in 1851, and 889-900 in 1852. Volume 10 was again published in two parts: the dates given here are those of their presentation by the publisher Pamplin to the Linnean Society. |series |volume in series |part in volume |volume consecutive |part consecutive |*plates* |dates| |--- |--- |--- |--- |--- |--- |--- | |1 |1 |1 |1 |1 |1-50 |1-4 Nov 1836| | | |2 | |2 |51-100 |1 Feb 1837| | |2 |1 |2 |3 |101-150 |Apr 1837| | | |2 | |4 |151-200 |7 Oct-8 Nov 1837| | |3 |1 |3 |5 |201-250 |Jan-Feb 1839| | | |2 | |6 |251-300 |6 Jan-6 Feb 1840| | |4 |1 |4 |7 |301-350 |Mai-Dec 1840| | | |2 | |8 |351-400 |6 Jul-6 Aug 1841| |2
('new series') |1 |1 |5 |9 |401-450 |late 1841| | | |2 | |10 |451-500 |Jan-Oct 1842| | |2 |1 |6 |11 |501-550 |Jan 1843| | | |2 | |12 |551-600 |Jul 1843| | |3 |1 |7 |13 |601-650 |Jan 1844| | | |2 | |14 |651-700 |Jul 1844| | |4 |1 |8 |15 |701-750 |Mai 1845| | | |2 | |16 |751-800 |Mai 1848| | |5 | |9 | |801-888 |Apr-Dec 1851| | | | | | |889-900 |Apr-Sep 1852| | |6 |1 |10 | |901-950 |25 Jan 1854| | | |2 | | |951-1000 |19 Mai 1854| The third series of *Hooker's Icones plantarum* was edited by Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker (vols. 11-19) and later by Daniel Oliver (vol. 20). The dates of publication of the parts of the volumes 14-20 are given on the title-pages; those of the parts of volumes 11-13 are cited here from manuscript annotations in the copies of the libraries at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, and of the Botany Department of the British Museum (Natural History), London. |vol. |part |*plates* |dates | |--- |--- |--- |--- | |11 |1 |1001-1025 |Nov 1867 | |2 |1026-1050 |Jun 1868 | |3 |1051-1075 |Feb 1870 | |4 |1076-1100 |Jan 1871 |12 |1 |1101-1125 |Aug 1872 | |2 |1126-1150 |Apr 1873 | |3 |1151-1175 |Dec 1873| | |4 |1176-1200 |Mai 1876| |13 |1 |1201-1225 |Jun 1877| | |2 |1226-1250 |Dec 1877| | |3 |1251-1275 |Jun 1878| | |4 |1276-1300 |Jan 1879| The dates and contents of the parts of series 4-5 are always given on the title-pages and hence not repeated here. *Editors*: *1-1000* William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865). *1001-1925* Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911). *1926-2425* Daniel Oliver (1830-1916). *2426-2800* William Turner Thiselton-Dyer (1843-1928). *2801-3000* David Prain (1857-1944). *3001-3400* Arthur William Hill (1875-1941). *3401-3500* Edward James Salibury (1886-x). *3501-3700* George Taylor (1904-x). *3701-x* John Patrick Micklethwait Brenan (1917-x). *Imprints*: 1-2 London (Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green & Longman) 3-4 London (Longman, Orme, Brown, Green and Longmans) 5-8 London (Hippolyte Baillière...), Paris (J. For this reason we give only one table, applicable to all nine volumes: |pages |month | |pages |month| |--- |--- |--- |--- |--- | |1-32 |Jan | |193-224 |Jul| |33-64 |Feb | |225-256 |Aug| |65-96 |Mar | |257-288 |Sep| |97-128 |Apr | |289-320 |Oct| |129-160 |Mai | |321-352 |Nov| |161-192 |Jun | |353-386 |Dec| Minor variations on this scheme include vol. 5 (416 p.) and vol. 4 (352 p., possibly only in 11 fascicles). *Imprints*: all London, 1: Reeve, Benham and Reeve; 2-3: Reeve and Benham; 4: Reeve and Co.; 5-9: Lovell Reeve. ##### n.3014.
