It is perhaps good to take this poem out of its prehistoric (vorweltlich) dust and mud, by putting it in this more modern frame-work (Rahmen). Murrill (1945) did not share Lindau's generous opinion of Hennings: "H. was an excitable, unreliable sort of person who perspired over dusty bundles of fungi sent in from the uttermost parts of the earth to the Berlin Botanic Garden where Engler was director. He inspired my distrust when he claimed to remember the spore measurements of scores of species. Maybe he did." See also Dennis (1952).
