#### Note
Hennings was an amateur poet; Lindau (1909) reproduces his plattdeutsch hedgehock story in addition to some rhymes dealing with idiosyncrasies of botanists such as his note on the principle of priority: "Eifrigst durchstöbern sie früh bis spät / Vermoderte Folianten, / Nach denen schon längst kein Hahn mehr kräht, / Die kaum vom Hören sie kannten- / Sie suchen Autoren der Vorweltzeit, / Verschollene Pflanzennamen, / Die werden von Staub und Moder befreit, / Gefügt in neue Rahmen." It is perhaps good to take this poem out of its prehistoric (vorweltlich) dust and mud, by putting it in this more modern frame-work (Rahmen). Murrill (1945) did not share Lindau's generous opinion of Hennings: "H. was an excitable, unreliable sort of person who perspired over dusty bundles of fungi sent in from the uttermost parts of the earth to the Berlin Botanic Garden where Engler was director. He inspired my distrust when he claimed to remember the spore measurements of scores of species. Maybe he did." See also Dennis (1952). For a critical evaluation of H's mycological work see e.g. Höhnel (1911).
