Hungary); Dr. med. Leipzig 1759; physician at Chemnitz (1762-1781), later at Leipzig; ultimately professor of botany and director of the botanic garden at Leipzig. **Abbreviated name**: *Hedw.* \[standard form in IPNI: *Hedw.*\] #### Herbarium and types [[Collection G|G]]. – Johan Hedwig's herbarium went, after his death, to his son R. A. Hedwig. In 1810 Schwägrichen bought the Hedwig moss herbarium. The Hedwig-Schwägrichen herbarium was sold by auction and came to the hands of J. E. Duby, after whose death the collections were again put up for sale. Duby's exotic mosses and some of the European collections went to William Barbey for the Boissier herbarium (1886) together with what was then already called the Schwägrichen-Hedwig type herbarium. This herbarium was transferred to the general collection of [[Collection G|G]] in 1958. In addition, A. P. de Candolle had acquired duplicates of musci directly from Hedwig. These are also at [[Collection G|G]]. The other European mosses of Duby went to L. Motelay at Bordeaux. Their present location is unknown. *Ref*.: Briquet, Bull. Soc. bot.
