Hull, in 1792-1812 at Little Chelsea, London, from 1812-1817 again at Cottingham; from 1817 or 1818 again at Chelsea; died of cholera; leading authority on succulent plants. **Abbreviated name**: *Haw.* \[standard form in IPNI: *Haw.*\] #### Herbarium and types Haworth's herbarium was bought by Fielding who used it for study and threw away most of the specimens. Some specimens of *Aloe, Apicra, Gasteria* and *Haworthia* labelled by Haworth are still in the Fielding herbarium ([[Collection OXF|OXF]]). Haworth had a garden in Chelsea where he grew succulent plants (1817-1833). It may be assumed that, as was not unusual with botanists working with succulent plants, Haworth did not always make herbarium specimens of the new species he grew. Desmond mentions also Haworth plants at [[Collection K|K]]. – Letters at [[Collection K|K]], [[Collection LINN|LINN]], Teyler. #### Bibliography and biography AG 3: 69; Backer p. 256; Barnhart 2: 142; BB p. 143; Blunt p. 211; BM 2: 804; Bossert p. 168; Clokie p. 180; CSP 3: 235-236, 15: 694; Desmond p. 295 (q.v. for further references); DNB 25: 246-247; Dryander 3: 288; Frank 3(Anh.): 42; Henrey 2: 389, 425, 434-435, 632, 429, 432-434, 720, 3: 52-53; Hortus 3: 1194 ("Haw."); Kew 2: 611; Jackson p. 556 \[index\]; Langman p. 354; MW p. 162; PR 3856-3861 (ed. 1: 4218-4223); Rehder 5: 374; RS p. 87; TL-2/135; Tucker 1: 327; Zander ed. 10, p. 668. - Allan, M., The Hookers of Kew 35, 41. 1969. - Faulkner, Th., An historical and topographical description of Chelsea and its environs ii, Chelsea 1829, p. 11-13 (fide Rauschenberg; contemp. view of H's later years). - Guillemin, A., Arch. de Bot. 2: 479-480. 1833. - Herbert, W., Amaryllidaceae 293-296. 1837 (critique of H's taxonomy). - J.D., Mag. nat.
