Bot. 22: 96. 1884 (rumored destr. herb.). - *Note*: Britten (1884) commenting on the rumored destruction of Hance's library and herbarium "during the serious riot of the natives on the British concession at Canton last year" reasssured the readers of the Journal of Botany that recent letters "make no mention of such a calamity, although he must have passed a *mauvais quart d'heure* during the disturbance" \[question: who go out in the midday sun together with the mad dogs?\]. Actually Hance had indeed lost his books and herbarium during the burning of the foreign factories at Canton in December 1884. During the Shameen riot at Canton in 1883 Hance wrote home: "Inter arma silent Musae and I am afraid Britten will find my reed very voiceless this year." Hance, J. Bot. 5: 136. 1867: "Mainly occupied with matters unconnected with Botany \[he was on his honeymoon\]... in the month of June, 1852, I gathered a heath... an Erica which I determined at that time..." #### Bibliography and biography Backer p. 253; Barnhart 2: 120; BB p. 137; BJI 1: 24; BM 2: 781; Bret. p. 365, 532, 632-652; CSP 3: 156, 7: 898-900, 10: 127-129, 15: 614; DTS 1: 102; Desmond 283; DNB 24: 272-273; Hortus 3: 1194 ("Hance"); IF p. 701; IH 2: 252; Kew 2: 569; Jackson p. 555; Langman p. 347; MW p. 151-156; Plesch p. 249; Rehder 5: 363; RS p. 86; SK 1: 214-215, 5: cclxxxiii; TL-2/427, 1814; Tucker 1: 315; Zander ed. 10, p. 667. - Anon., Bot.
