\* Guettard, Jean-Étienne (1715-1786), French physician, geologist and naturalist, born 22 Sep 1715 in Étampes (Île de France), studied botany under Bernard de Jussieu, Faculty of Medicine, Paris 1742, from 1747 "médecin botaniste" to and keeper of the Duc d'Orléans's natural history collection, he was the first to survey and geologically map France and to observe the exposed bedrock of the Paris Basin, died 6 \[7?\] Jan 1786 in Paris.
