\* Gottsche, Carl \[Karl\] Moritz (1808-1892), Danish-born German physician and hepaticologist (noted for superb drawings), born 3 Jul 1808 in Altona (then part of Denmark), graduated in Berlin and Copenhagen as doctor of medicine and surgery in 1831, settled in Altona 1834 to care for his father and practice medicine, after his father's death in 1837 he devoted his life to botany and often traveled (e.g. E. Asia 1885), died 28 Sep 1892 \[of typhus?\] in Altona (then part of Prussia).

Gottsche's original herb., mss. and drawings were at [[Collection B|B]]. "... wohl haben Asa Gray und Hooker versucht, es uns Deutschen zu entführen; dem patriotischen Manne war es ein Herzensbedürfniss, dass es in Deutschland blieb, und so verbindet sich mit dem Schmerz über seinem Heimgang, die Freude, dass uns dieser Schatz... erhalten geblieben ist" (*fide* Stephani). [[Collection BM|BM]] has "many authentic specimens of hepatics described by him, acquired with Herb. Hampe in 1881", [[Collection MANCH|MANCH]] has Bryoph., and other specimens are at [[Collection GH|GH]] and [[Collection GJO|GJO]]. Also of note are the *Icones jubularum*, tracings of drawings and hepatics by Gottsche and others, now at [[Collection FH|FH]] (see TL-2/6: 706).
